Ex-Leeds United man heartbreak as new Premier League opponents for Whites are decided

New Leeds United opponents have been confirmed for next season’s Premier League.

Leeds United will face Hull City in next season’s Premier League after a dramatic ending to Saturday afternoon’s Championship play-off final and heartbreak for a former Whites star.

With Championship champions Coventry City and runners-up Ipswich Town already promoted, Hull City took on Middlesbrough in Saturday’s Wembley play-off final, Boro replacing Southampton who were expelled following their Spygate saga.

Saturday’s final featured Leeds players of past and present, Whites loanee Joe Gelhardt and also former Leeds defender Cody Drameh named on the bench for Hull who were captained by ex-Leeds youngster Lewie Coyle.

Promotion winning Whites hero Luke Ayling started for Boro, the right back looking to seal a second promotion to the country’s top flight at 34 years old.

Both sides had chances in open but goalless first half, Hull striker Oli McBurnie coming the closest when seeing his header bounce back off the crossbar.

With the score still 0-0, Gelhardt was finally called for in the 63rd minute as he replaced Liam Millar.

The game looked destined for extra-time but in eight minutes of added time McBurnie netted a 96th-minute winner.

A cross from Yu Hirakawa was spilled by Boro keeper Sol Brynn and McBurnie was quick to pounce, tucking the ball away in a crowded box to spark wild celebrations from the Hull fans.

It meant joy for Leeds loanee Gelhardt and ex-Whites men Coyle and Drameh but heartache for Ayling and Boro who must now try again to end their exile from the country’s top-flight in next season’s Championship.
