Leeds United FA Cup opponents Chelsea face late fitness tests on key pair as attacker is ruled out
Chelsea will make a late call on the fitness and availability of a pair of key attackers ahead of Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United.
The Blues go into the game in decidedly poor form with just a single victory in their last eight games. A 3-0 battering by Brighton and Hove Albion in midweek ended Liam Rosenior's time as manager at Stamford Bridge and he has been replaced by caretaker Calum McFarlane until the end of the season. McFarlane's first job is to pick a team to take on an in-form Leeds side at Wembley. The Whites are unbeaten in seven and coming off the back of a 97th-minute equaliser at Bournemouth that moved them onto 40 points and almost certain safety from relegation. What's more they haven't lost to Chelsea this season, beating them 3-1 at Elland Road and coming back from two goals down to draw 2-2 away from home.
Cole Palmer was a problem for the Whites in that second encounter, but he's one of the players whose availability is still not certain for Sunday's clash. McFarlane is hopeful that both Palmer and Joao Pedro will make it, but winger Estevao Willian is definitely out.
McFarlane was on media duties on Friday afternoon, following the announcement he would take charge of the side as interim head
"Estevao unfortunately won’t play for us this season," said McFarlane. "He will be out for a little bit of time. We’re not sure how long he will be out for but he certainly won’t play for us again this season, unfortunately. That’s really unfortunate for him, especially for someone so young and talented as he is but we are here to support him and be around him.
"With Joao and Cole, they both trained today and are in a good place. We don’t know yet [whether they can feature on Sunday], but we have another day tomorrow to have a look at them and then make a call on them. But we hope so [they can be involved], but it’s important we give them time. We are going to train tomorrow, they will both be involved and we will make a call on them after that session."
