Leeds United incoming summer transfer made up mind prior to new boss decision after 'peak' season

From an aborted deadline day move to becoming Fulham's star player, Leeds United's incoming free agent Harry Wilson had a dramatic 2025/26 season.

Wales international Wilson has agreed a move to Elland Road, less than a year after coming close to doing just that. The Whites thought they had a deadline day deal to be done until Fulham's change of heart saw the plug pulled on Wilson's move. Fulham had exercised their option in Wilson's contract to keep him at Craven Cottage for the 2025/26 season and though he would not sign a new deal he did give the Cottagers some of the best football of his life as a parting gift. His final season as a Fulham player brought 10 goals and seven assists in the English top flight, helping them finish 11th in the table just a point off European football.

Leeds faced stiff competition for Wilson's services this summer, his stellar season making him one of the hottest free agents on the market but all that is required now is his medical and the paperwork to make him the first new Elland Road arrival of the transfer window.

Fulham journalist Jack Kelly saw a player going out on a high in the last year of his contract. "Harry Wilson rose to be Fulham's star player last season," he told the YEP. "He provided 11 goals and seven assists in all competitions in what was a stand-out season for the Welshman. His overall play improved year on year under Marco Silva, and last season he hit his peak in terms of performance in a Fulham shirt. Some of the goals he scored were excellent. Long range strikes. solo efforts and finishing off dangerous counter-attacks. For a large part of the season, Wilson looked sharp. dangerous and at the top of his game."

According to Kelly Wilson highlighted throughout the final year of his contract that his next deal was a big one in his career. And with Marco Silva departing as well, Fulham were unable to convince Wilson to stay despite their best efforts to reach an agreement with his representatives. Director of football Tony Khan revealed to Kelly that Wilson may wait to see who the new manager was at Fulham before making a final call. It was reported yesterday that Alvaro Arbeloa is the leading candidate for the vacancy left by Silva, but Wilson evidently made up his mind that he too would leave Craven Cottage this summer.
