Leeds United 'big talking point' referee appointed for crunch Premier League clash
The referee for Leeds United's Premier League trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday will be refereed by a man Daniel Farke refused to talk about earlier this season.
Thomas Bramall is the man in charge for the Eagles versus the Whites at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon. It's his first time refereeing a Leeds game since Leeds hosted Palace at Elland Road earlier this season. On that occasion there was little controversy, though Bramall did award Palace a 90th-minute penalty that Justin Devenny tucked away as a consolation in their 4-1 defeat.
It was when Bramall took charge of another Elland Road fixture this season that Farke took issue. The Sheffield native was the man in the middle when Spurs took a 2-1 win and Farke was asked for his take on the referee's performance at full-time. "I have to be careful and do not like to comment," he said. "Last time we had this referee it was a big talking point and got a letter. Leave it to other people to comment. I cannot influence this."
The previous game to which Farke was referring was a frustrating 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road against Luton Town, though the main talking point after that game was the manager's bullish insistence that the Whites would still get promoted. Prior to that the only other time Bramall has refereed Leeds was their 5-2 FA Cup victory over Cardiff City.
Leeds have won two, drawn one and lost one of the four games Bramall has taken charge of. This season the referee has dished out 100 yellows from his 25 matches, along with a trio of red cards. He has also pointed to the spot seven times.
Bramall will be joined by assistants Lee Betts and Matthew Wilkes, with Paul Tierney as fourth official. James Bell will be Video Assistant Referee, supported by Craig Taylor.
