Massive fresh boost for Leeds United's relegation-battling rivals but star man injured in double blow

Another of Leeds United’s relegation-battling rivals were in action on Monday afternoon.

Another of Leeds United’s relegation-battling rivals have given themselves a huge boost in their quest for Premier League survival but amid a star man injury blow.

One day on from Tottenham’s 2-1 win at Aston Villa, Forest recorded a 3-1 victory at Bank Holiday Monday’s hosts troubled Chelsea which sent Forest six points clear of the drop zone and back within one point of Daniel Farke’s Whites.

Leeds, though, remain on the cusp of mathematically sealing survival which will be guaranteed if title-chasing Arsenal win at third-bottom West Ham next Sunday afternoon.

Friday night’s win for Leeds against Burnley saw the Whites kick nine points clear of Tottenham Hotspur, seven ahead of West Ham and four clear of Forest in the battle for survival.

West Ham then suffered a crushing blow through a 3-0 defeat at Brentford the following day which led to them dropping into relegation zone as Tottenham then won 2-1 at Aston Villa on Sunday night.

Forest then finally got their turn on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon in a 3pm kick-off against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the match falling just three days before Thursday evening’s Europa League semi-finals second leg at Aston Villa.

Forest lined up against Chelsea sat just three points clear of the drop zone in being three points ahead of West Ham, two points ahead of Tottenham and four points behind Leeds and Crystal Palace but having played a game less.

Eight changes made to the team

Ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi, boss Vitor Pereira made eight changes to his team, one day on from Villa boss Unai Emery making seven changes to his side who then suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Tottenham.

Forest though got off to a flying start as Taiwo Awoniyi fired the Reds in front with just two minutes on the clock and things then got even better for the Reds as they were awarded a penalty for Malo Gusto’s shirt pull on Awoniyi in the box.

Igor Jesus stepped up to take the spot kick and thumped home his penalty down the middle of the goal as keeper Robert Sanchez dived to his right.

Chelsea were then given the opportunity to pull a goal back through a penalty of their own as youngster Jesse Derry was fouled in a collision of heads with Zach Abbott.

After a lengthy delay, Derry was stretchered off and Cole Palmer’s spot kick was saved by Matz Sels as Forest took a 2-0 lead into the break.

Star man off injured shortly after coming on

Forest boss Pereira then made a triple change during the interval as star men Morgan Gibbs-White, Elliot Anderson and Nikola Milenkovic were all brought on.

Within seven minutes of the restart, Forest were 3-0 up, Gibbs-White setting up Awoniyi to score his second goal of the game.

Gibbs-White was later taken off after clashing heads with Blues keeper Sanchez who also made way and Chelsea thought they had pulled goal back with 15 minutes left through Joao Pedro. VAR intervened, though, and the goal was chalked off for Joao Pedro being offside.

Chelsea and Joao Pedro finally got a goal in the 93rd minute but Forest had already done more than enough to seal another huge three points but amid injuries to Gibbs-White and Abbott.
