"Amazing" - Pierre Sage's Leeds United claim, praise and Bielsa revelation in Palace point verdict
Crystal Palace boss Pierre Sage after a first taste of Elland Road in Sunday’s goalless draw for his Crystal Palace side.
Crystal Palace boss Pierre Sage made an “amazing things” Leeds United claim with praise for Daniel Farke’s Whites and also former boss Marcelo Bielsa in his Elland Road draw verdict.
French manager Sage left Lens to become Palace’s new manager in June and the former Lyon boss was given a first experience of Elland Road in Sunday’s Premier League clash which ended in a goalless draw.
Sage, though, said the noise that greeted Palace’s disallowed goal midway through the second half was akin to a team scoring a goal as he saluted both the atmosphere inside the stadium and United teams of past and present.
The 47-year-old said he knew all about Leeds from compatriot Eric Cantona’s early career and also revealed an admiration for United’s former head coach Marcelo Bielsa and watching many of his Leeds team’s games.
Sage also served up praise for the current Whites team and boss Daniel Farke as he saluted a “good point” at Elland Road despite his team having chances to win the game.
Speaking at his post match press conference, Sage was asked by the YEP if he thought a draw was a fair result and what he had made to a first experience of the atmosphere inside Elland Road.
"Yes and it was special,” said Sage.
"And once the goal was cancelled it seemed as though they scored!
"It was crazy at this moment and to be honest, I think that gives some strength to the team because they have the biggest situation, the biggest opportunity just after that when Walter Benitez made a good save.
"And when the fans are like this I think the team can do amazing things if you want.
"I like this kind of atmosphere, you know, I'm French, I know Cantona had his first game here.
"I love Bielsa, I looked at a lot of his games when he was here too and when I prepared this game I like to watch this team too because they play well. I like the commitment, I like the ideas of the coach and I like the atmosphere here too."
On the result, Sage said: "It's a good point to make a clean sheet but it would be a better point if we won this game because I think we created some chances too. That's why we have to analyse this clean sheet too, not only in the way to defend but in the way to attack. We created some chances without scoring and I think altogether it's a good point."
