Leeds United were unable to boost their Premier League survival chances on Tuesday night after losing 1-0 at home to Sunderland. Habib Diarra’s second-half penalty proved decisive on a frustrating night for the majority inside Elland Road.
Ethan Ampadu’s handball gave Sunderland that chance to score from 12 yards and came just minutes after Joe Rodon saw a goal disallowed for offside. That was undoubtedly the correct call but there was a lot more debate around the failure to give Leeds a first-half penalty.
Luke O’Nien grappled Pascal Struijk round the neck during a set-piece but that went unpunished. The Sunderland captain then played a key role as his side employed the dark arts to claim all three points.
Leeds remain six points clear of relegation but with West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur all playing their game in hand this week, the relegation picture could change. And that has been reflected by a change in the bookmakers’ odds, which are courtesy of Bet365.
