Leeds United teen named among possible solutions for West Ham problem with three ruled out
Leeds United have three players out in the same position ahead of Sunday’s last game of the Premier League season at West Ham.
Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has named an Under 21s player among his options for a 'problem' position amid a late-season injury crisis.
Ilia Gruev's meniscus injury ended his campaign early, before Anton Stach suffered a deep cut on his ankle that required stitches during the win over Brighton.
And to complete the central midfield injury conundrum ahead of Sunday's league finale at West Ham United, Sean Longstaff went under the knife for a minor hernia operation.
None of the three are available this weekend, alongside the likes of Noah Okafor and Gabi Gudmundsson, presenting Farke with a complicated puzzle to try and solve.
Among his options are the obvious solutions - captain Ethan Ampadu, Ao Tanaka and Brenden Aaronson - and some not-so obvious solutions.
Rhys Chadwick, still only 19, has been in and around the first team picture for a while under Farke but has not yet made a senior league outing. The teen was an unused substitute last weekend against Brighton.
"We have Ethan Ampadu, our player of the season, Ao Tanaka has played there," Farke began. "We have young players who can play in this central role.
“Rhys Chadwick can play in this spot. Other players who are not in their prime position but perhaps can play a bit deeper, Brenden can play slightly deeper though he's more likely to be further up the pitch. Joel Piroe has even played a bit deeper.
“With all three out it's a bit of a problem, you can't plan with seven or eight for two positions or you'd blow up the squad a bit too much. It could be that young players travel with us, but also within the group we would have players who can also play in different positions. But I don't want to lie, it's a bit of a tricky situation."
Eighteen-year-old Alfie Cresswell, younger brother of former Leeds defender Charlie, was also among the unused substitutes last Sunday when Leeds beat the Seagulls. This season for the Under 21s he has played in defensive midfield and central midfield roles.
