Roy Keane delivers ultimate praise for Leeds United star eyeing huge personal milestone vs West Ham
Dominic Calvert-Lewin will have his World Cup fate confirmed ahead of Leeds United's final-day trip to West Ham.
Roy Keane believes Dominic Calvert-Lewin ‘could not have done any more’ for Leeds United this season after scoring his 14th goal against Brighton.
Calvert-Lewin gave Elland Road one final goal to celebrate this season, his 95th-minute winner taking Leeds on to an impressive 47 points with one game to go. The 29-year-old was quick to pounce on a nightmare Jan Paul van Hecke back-pass before rounding goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and rolling into an empty net.
That was goal number 14 for Calvert-Lewin, who is now the joint-highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League alongside Morgan Gibbs-White and Ollie Watkins. It’s also his best return since 2020/21 where he bagged 16 at Everton under Carlo Ancelotti.
“Yeah, listen, it is poor defending and decision-making, and I’m not sure what the goalkeeper is doing either,” Keane told Sky Sports of the goal. “Credit to Leeds, they stuck at it, they have good spirit, and they never gave up.
“It was their first shot on target, but look, Calvert-Lewin does what all good strikers do and chases a lost cause, and he gets his reward. I think Brighton will be kicking themselves. It’s a moment that I think will cost Brighton dearly, but huge credit to Leeds.
“What a signing he has been, Calvert-Lewin on a free. A brilliant signing who could not have done any more for Leeds.”
A brilliant debut Leeds United season for Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Calvert-Lewin has one more game to continue that form and increase his Leeds tally. The Whites round off their season at West Ham on Sunday, by which point their hosts will either be relegated or needing a win to survive.
The Leeds frontman will first have an eye on Friday’s England World Cup squad announcement with hope he’s done enough to convince head coach Thomas Tuchel. The role of back-up to Harry Kane is very much up for grabs with Calvert-Lewin rivalling the likes of Watkins and Danny Welbeck.
"I've loved it [this season]. It's been so enjoyable,” Calvert-Lewin told Match of the Day following Sunday’s win. “I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity here and to be able to enjoy my football again. I’m at my best when I’m enjoying what I do.
“The culture at the club is the most important thing. It really is the heartbeat of the club. The characters we have got, hard working boys in the team.
"That's the life of a striker. Sometimes you have to wait a while to get your chance but you’ve always got to be tuned in and thankfully I was today. You know if you get one chance you can score.”
