Big move changes Leeds United landscape amid England international John Stones claim

Leeds United have been credited with interest in an England international defender.

Tarik Muharemovic joined Leeds United amid reports of Whites interest in England international defender John Stones but now a changed defensive landscape at Elland Road.

Bosnia and Herzegovina international centre-back Muharemovic became the second most expensive in United’s history on Friday in joining the club for £34m on a five-year deal from Serie A side Sassuolo.

The arrival of Muharemovic followed the departure of fellow left-sided centre-back Pascal Struijk who joined Brighton in a £20m deal.

Muharemovic now joins Joe Rodon and Jaka Bijol in what is expected to be the first choice three-man centre back axis if boss Daniel Farke opts to continue with the same system that served the team so well in the second half of last season.

The versatile James Justin and Sebastiaan Bornauw provide further cover at centre-back in addition to captain Ethan Ampadu who can drop into the heart of defence if required.

But as Leeds were wrapping the medical for Muharemovic, a report from the BBC claimed that United were interested in signing England international defender Stones who has become a free agent this summer upon his contract at the Etihad expiring.

It is understood that Leeds did look into Stones towards the end of last season but that his wages were always likely to prove a stumbling block.

The arrival of Muharemovic now changes the defensive landscape at Elland Road and the YEP understands it would be a surprise if the club signed another centre-back this summer.
