Leeds United star 'a good option' for England manager Thomas Tuchel as shock World Cup call-up touted

Leeds United could be represented in England's World Cup finals squad if one in-form star continues to impress Thomas Tuchel.

One in-form Leeds United star would provide Thomas Tuchel with ‘a great option’ in his squad for next summer’s World Cup finals - according to former Three Lions goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The Whites have hit a strong run of form after head coach Daniel Farke tweaked his tactics in recent weeks and that has improved their performance in attacking areas. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been the main beneficiary of the new approach and the former Everton striker has now scored six goals in his last five games after finding the net twice in Saturday night’s 4-1 home win against Crystal Palace.

That has taken his Whites tally to seven goals in 16 games in all competitions as the striker continues to impress following his summer move to Elland Road. Calvert-Lewin’s scoring record at international level is solid after he netted four goals in 11 senior appearances for England - although he has not appeared for the Three Lions since coming off the bench during the Euro 2020 quarter-final win against Ukraine.

However, talk of a possible recall has ramped up with his upturn in form in recent weeks - and Hart has insisted the Whites frontman should be under consideration alongside the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion forward Danny Welbeck and Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins.

Speaking on Saturday night’s Match of the Day, the former Manchester City goalkeeper said: “I’ve done quite a lot of Leeds games this season and I think even when they have lost they have not been bad. Since that change, they’ve been excellent, scoring goals quite freely and Daniel Farke can be really pleased with his team, they look like they’re in a really good moment. He (Calvert-Lewin) is going to be in his (Thomas Tuchel’s) thoughts. He’s proven when he is fit and he is firing. He’s scored six goals in his last five games and I saw him interviewed recently about how good he feels about his game. We’ve talked about Danny Welbeck, Harry Kane is going to be there, Ollie Watkins - but a fit Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a great option.”

Speaking after the win, the Whites striker told Sky Sports: "The belief stays the same. The belief I have in myself hasn't changed. I want to give my best for the team and continue playing well. I enjoy having bodies around me. It can be a lonely role up there on your own. With bodies around you, you can link play and I think that's why I've had success recently.

"I don't get carried away (with talk of England). My job remains the same whether I'm scoring or not scoring. I work hard, lead the line for my team and the rest takes care of itself. It's a big result for us. We didn't want to undo our good work over recent weeks. We're taking it game by game and focusing on what we control."
