Leeds United linked with transfer after Harry Wilson update

Leeds United appear to have turned their attention to a new attacking target after their deal for Harry Wilson fell through last summer.

Leeds United's interest in Fulham’s Harry Wilson was heavily reported last summer but it now appears the club will not make another move for the Welsh attacker. Instead, the Whites are reportedly targeting experienced Switzerland international Ruben Vargas, according to reports in Spain.

Vargas currently plies his trade in La Liga with Sevilla and is in good form so far this season with seven goals and assists in 12 league games.

The 58-cap international would add versatility to Daniel Farke’s forward line, and as an established player across top leagues in Europe, he could add great experience as well as goal threat to a team that has been lacking in the final third for spells this season.

Vargas would reportedly cost £17m and likely be a cheaper alternative to Wilson.

Leeds’ form has picked up as of late but before the recent good run, questions were being asked of Farke and how well-suited he is and getting the best out of attackers. However, in recent weeks, new signings Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have begun to flourish and help their side pick up points on a regular basis in the league.

Now, with pressure eased, the German boss can look forward to bolstering his side in the upcoming January transfer window and Vargas could be an attacker to help the Yorkshire side retain their Premier League status.

When Vargas made his first big move to Augsburg in 2020, sporting director Stefan Reuter said, “In Ruben Vargas, we’ve succeeded in signing a big Swiss talent, whom other European clubs were also interested in signing.

“Ruben developed brilliantly in Luzern and is now ready to take the next step. We’re certain that he will greatly strengthen our squad.”

And he did not disappoint, making over 150 appearances for the German side before moving to Sevilla in January 2025, where he has settled in well with good numbers this season. It remains to be seen whether a move to the Premier League could tempt Vargas after only a year in Spain, but with Leeds’ form improving, they could start attracting bigger names to Elland Road.
