Leeds United 'monitoring very closely' as striker's loan deal in the EFL is finalised

Harry Gray will link up with a former Leeds United club captain this summer.

Leeds United have sent one of their most highly-rated youngsters out on loan to the EFL for the 2026/27 season.

It became clear early last season that academy football was not going to offer Harry Gray too much more in the way of learning or development. He fired in 11 goals in 14 games for the Under-21s and then pushed to go out on loan to play men's football in the second half of the campaign. Leeds agreed with the teenager that he needed a step up and arranged for him to head out to Rotherham United in January.

The relegation battle Gray walked into was a particularly bleak one for the Millers but from a Leeds perspective it provided the striker with regular minutes and vital experience of going up against much older, more experienced opponents. Gray led the line and played on the wing, scoring three goals in his 20 appearances.

Leeds' hope is that his next loan - a season-long stint with League One promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday - will present him with greater chances of hitting the net on a more regular basis. The two clubs have come to an agreement and Gray has linked up with the Owls for pre-season training. Wednesday are at the start of a new ownership regime and have former Leeds captain Liam Cooper signed up for the coming season. The expectation is that they will be among the promotion candidates.

A club statement said: "Leeds United can confirm Harry Gray has joined Sky Bet League One side Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan. After the 17-year-old excelled at the start of the 2025/26 season for Scott Gardner’s Under-21s by netting 11 goals in 14 appearances, including strikes in the EFL Trophy, a very productive loan to third-tier Rotherham United followed to give Gray important senior experience in the game.

"With the Millers, the forward made 20 appearances and grabbed three goals in a side battling to avoid the drop, showing his versatility when tasked with leading the line or being deployed on the flanks. Harry has also followed a long line of Grays at Leeds United in making his first team debut for the club, which came at the age of 16 against Stoke City in the 2024/25 campaign on the day we secured promotion back to the top-flight.

"Capped by England at Under-17 level, Gray now returns to South Yorkshire to link up with an Owls side keen on bouncing back to the Championship at the first time of asking. Everyone at Leeds United would like to wish Harry well during his time at Hillsborough and we will be monitoring his progress very closely."
