The genius £40m player-plus-cash deal that could bring 'superb' striker to Leeds United
Leeds United have enquired about Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen but a hefty price-tag could prove problematic.
Leeds United might need to get creative if they want to afford Jorgen Strand Larsen and one potential avenue could save them millions.
Having secured the services of attacking midfielder Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton last week, Leeds chiefs have now turned their attention to improving Daniel Farke’s striker ranks. Free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been excellent this season but should he pick up an injury, current back-up Lukas Nmecha doesn’t offer quite the same profile - a profile that has been central to recent success.
The YEP reported last week that Leeds have made an enquiry over Strand Larsen, who could leave Wolves this month with relegation all but confirmed. There is expected to be plenty of competition for his signature, however, with Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest among those also interested.
Another major hurdle surrounds the financial aspect, with reports suggesting Wolves want £40m for the striker who scored 14 Premier League goals last season. Leeds managing director Robbie Evans revealed in September the club were right up against it in terms of PSR, with any further outlay needing to be offset by sales or other levers.
A multi-million pound deal, at present, would need to be weighted heavily towards future payments if Leeds are to afford Strand Larsen but they also have something that could sweeten the deal. Joel Piroe is currently fourth or fifth choice striker and while neither he nor the club are pushing for a January exit, there could come a point where decisions need to be made.
Piroe is thought to be keen on proving himself in the Premier League but cannot do that as a late substitute or bench spectator. The 2024/25 Championship Golden Boot winner hasn't started a league game since Arsenal in August, with eight introductions since averaging just over nine minutes per appearance.
Leeds United could knock millions off Jorgen Strand Larsen price-tag
Minutes will likely be more forthcoming at Molineux, admittedly for a Wolves side destined to be in the Championship next season, and a string of decent performances between now and May would improve his stock. It would also keep him sharp ahead of two crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers for Suriname in March.
Leeds paid a total of £12m to Swansea City for Piroe, £2m of which was a promotion-related bonus, and would expect to at least break even or make a small profit. A valuation of £15m, for example, could feasibly be seen as acceptable for a striker with what Farke insists is a world class level of finishing.
By offering Piroe as a makeweight in their pursuit of Strand Larsen, Leeds could theoretically bring his price tag down from £40m to something more like £25m - a much more manageable figure, especially when amortised over the length of a contract. They would also be offering Wolves a ready-made replacement and someone who could fire in a few goals between now and May.
An obvious caveat would be to note just how rare swap deals or player-plus-cash transfers are in modern football. With so many plates to spin between two clubs, two sets of agents, two players and the increasingly complicated financial gymnastics needed to comply with PSR, finding a deal that works for everyone is almost impossible.
But if Leeds feel they have a chance to sign someone like Strand Larsen, a striker the all-time Premier League top-scorer Alan Shearer described as ‘superb’ last season, they must surely explore all avenues. Time will tell if they can find a way.
