Leeds United star's honest assessment of 'way below standard' West Ham performance as fan message sent
Leeds United put in one of their poorer recent performances in defeat at the London Stadium.
Leeds United defender Jayden Bogle admits Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to West Ham was ‘way below standard’ with lessons to be learned.
Bogle returned from a hamstring injury to start Leeds’ final game of the season, with Pascal Struijk also fit again but several others out. The Whites failed to capitalise on West Ham’s relegation nerves and were uncharacteristically sloppy, particularly after half-time.
Second-half goals from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson condemned Leeds to defeat, ending their eight-game unbeaten run. And even with nothing major to play for, the disappointment from Bogle and his teammates was clear to see.
"After a long season, we didn't really want to end it like that,” the right-back said. “So we are disappointed now but when we sit back and look back on the rest of the season, we can hold our heads high. It is just something to learn from, that you have to be on it for the full 90 minutes.
“First half, I think it was decent. We had a few chances, defended well. But again, second half was way below our standards, so it is a learning curve that you have to do it for 90-plus minutes every single game."
Fortunately for Leeds, Sunday’s defeat meant little when looking at the big picture. They’d been safe for two weeks before heading down to London and missed out only on climbing up a couple of positions in the table having failed to increase their 47-point tally.
That lack of jeopardy was apparent in the away end, with Leeds fans enjoying themselves just as much at 3-0 down as they were ahead of kick-off. They serenaded West Ham with a list of their 2026/27 Championship opponents and gave the Whites squad a standing ovation following full-time handshakes.
"You can see we were down and way below our standards, and they still stood up applauding us,” he added of the travelling support. “They have been like it all season, even when we have been for a tough patch. When we have been firing, they have stuck with us. Everyone in that changing room is grateful for it."
