Huge fresh Leeds United boost in damaging new blow for struggling Premier League rivals
Struggling Leeds United rivals have been dealt a huge blow in a fresh Whites boost.
Leeds United have received a huge fresh boost ahead of Sunday’s return to Premier League action at Sunderland via a hammer blow for struggling rivals.
Daniel Farke’s Whites kicked six points clear of the relegation zone through last weekend’s brilliant 4-1 win at home to Crystal Palace but third-bottom West Ham had the opportunity to close back up in Saturday afternoon’s hosting of Fulham.
The Irons approached the contest having gone six games without a victory and created plenty of chances to go in front yet instead Fulham made the breakthrough with just five minutes left.
Chance for nine-point gap
Just as the contest appeared to be heading for a goalless draw, Harry Wilson sent a cross back into the box which was converted by Raul Jimenez for what proved the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win for the Cottagers.
Defeat for West Ham leaves the Irons six points behind fifth-bottom Leeds whose Sunday afternoon clash at Sunderland now presents a game in hand.
It means a victory at the Stadium of Light would kick Farke’s side a huge nine points clear of the dropzone or seven clear with a draw.
Leeds also remain one point clear of fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest who suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester City in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.
Like West Ham, Forest have also played one game more than Farke’s Whites.
Victory at Sunderland would also take Leeds level on points with Bournemouth who suffered another defeat on Saturday with a 4-1 loss at Brentford.
