"Take it" - Phil Parkinson on Wrexham beating Leeds United and Whites 'movements' delight

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson’s verdict on defeating Leeds United in Florida.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has saluted his side’s defeat of Leeds United as a “feather in our cap” - even in a pre-season friendly.

Parkinson’s side have rocketed through the leagues under the ownership of Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the Dragons now approaching a second season in the Championship having been a non-league side as recently as 2023.

Amazingly, the Red Dragons have never played Leeds in a competitive fixture yet the Welsh outfit locked horns with the Whites in United’s first pre-season friendly in America in the early hours of Sunday morning.

One week on from beating Manchester United in Finland, Wrexham went ahead after just 31 seconds and Parkinson’s side went on to record a 3-2 victory despite Leeds equalising twice through Joel Piroe and then Sean Longstaff.

Parkinson was keen to highlight the game was ultimately only a friendly but the Wrexham boss said beating Leeds was still a feather in the cap that his men would gladly take.

“A feather in our cap and we’ll take it”

The Red Dragons also declared his satisfaction with the way his team dealt with United’s movements and rotations in another test against top flight opposition.

Speaking to Wrexham’s official website, Parkinson said of the victory: “The lads will be pleased. Although it’s only pre-season, to beat a Premier League team is a feather in our cap and we’ll take it.

“It was a really good workout in very humid conditions. You have to be here to understand how tough it was but I thought the lads acquitted themselves really well.

“The work of all the lads on the pitch tonight was so good. The higher up you go, teams give you more problems with their movement and their rotations but the communication was just so good and it was a great exercise for us tonight.

“It was a good performance to take us into the Liverpool game.”
