Wayne Rooney takes Leeds United swipe in describing vision for Derby County side

WAYNE Rooney says he wants his Derby County side to be "attacking but with composure", declaring: "I don’t want the team to be a Leeds."

Former Rams player-boss Rooney aimed the dig at the Whites when speaking after his first game in charge as manager against Rotherham United on Saturday having announced his playing retirement from the game.

Derby fell to a 1-0 defeat in Saturday's home clash against the Millers but the Rams then bounced back with Tuesday night's 1-0 victory at home to Bournemouth.

The Pride Park outfit now sit fourth-bottom in the Championship table, two points above the dropzone but having played two games more than the third-bottom Millers.

Speaking after the Rotherham game and as quoted by Mail Online, the Derby boss was asked what a Rooney team would look like and said: "A winning one, I hope!.

"I want my team playing with energy, I want my team playing with a belief in terms of winning every game. That’s the mentality I need to change in the players.

"Attacking but with composure as well. I don’t want the team to be a Leeds, for instance, I want to have a good balance. I don’t want the players scared to make mistakes. I want them to play with freedom.

"I have signed for two and a half years to put my philosophy on the team.’
