Hull Seahawks 'deserved' derby win over Leeds Knights, says Matty Davies
MATTY DAVIES hailed another netminding masterclass from Leeds Knights’ Sam Gospel but felt his Hull Seahawks’ team were full value for their 3-2 win on Sunday night.
The Seahawks came from behind after going 2-0 behind inside five minutes at Hull Ice Arena.
The deficit was halved quickly but, for the next 40 minutes, Leeds goalie Gospel kept the hosts at bay.
When he was next beaten, it happened twice in 27 seconds with around 12 minutes remaining.
Hull outshot Leeds 44-23 on the night, the second period in particular resembling something of a siege in the Leeds zone as Hull dropped 19 shots on Gospel’s goal.
“They are a good team, but they are obviously short and fair play to them for staying in the game like that,” said Davies. “Gossy played unreal like he does and he made it hard on us.
“I felt we deserved the win. We dominated the second period and Gossy had to make some big saves and we had to just keep going, keep banging on the door.
“But we also had to maybe change our approach, maybe we had to get a bit more dirty around the net and go to the hard areas and make it harder on Gossy and the second goal definitely was from that.
“Then we’re on top and the crowd is behind us and then Hewey comes up with an absolutely massive goal as he does.”
