Whether you’ve been landing kickflips for a decade or you are picking up a board, a pair of quads, or inline skates for the very first time, finding the right environment to practice makes all the difference.
While the city's historic architectural landscapes often grab the headlines, a major street survey by local advocacy group CIVIC revealed that not knowing where to go safely remains the single biggest barrier for people trying to build up their confidence.
To mark international Go Skateboarding Day this Sunday (June 21), we are shining a light on the official, inclusive, and fully permitted spaces keeping the local scene moving - from classic central hubs and independent, skater-owned shops to top-tier custom concrete plazas tucked away in our outer suburbs, flip through our picture gallery to discover 9 essential skate spots and communities to check out and 'drop in' to across Leeds this weekend.
More importantly, we've selected areas designed specifically for skaters—so there is no fear of navigating heavy pedestrian footfall or dodging e-bike traffic. (And apologies to those of you who want to 'bomb' down Woodhouse Lane - that's definitely not happening anytime soon...)

7. Hawksworth Skatepark
Tucked away in the LS5 district, Hawksworth Skatepark offers an excellent neighbourhood training ground for transition and street skaters alike. Originally built with a classic layout, this free outdoor facility provides an essential, dedicated space for local youth and riders in the Kirkstall area to build their skills safely away from pedestrian footfall. 🛹 Hawksworth, Leeds LS5 3LX | Google Maps

8. LUU Skate Society
The Leeds University Union (LUU) Skate Society stands out as one of the city's most vital student-led community organisations. Specifically formed to combat gender division and elitism in wheeled sports, the society welcomes everyone from absolute beginners who have never stepped on a deck to advanced riders, offering a friendly environment focused on peer bonding. | Leeds Libraries, www.leodis.net

9. The Skate Sanctuary
For those who want eight wheels rather than four, though, The Skate Sanctuary at Mabgate Mills offers a phenomenal, inclusive environment. Founded and run by women, this independent studio and shop focuses heavily on dismantling the intimidating, elitist barriers that often keep new skaters from picking up wheels. 🛼 Mabgate mills, Macaulay St, Leeds LS9 7SW | Tony Johnston
