Julian Appleyard, CEO of Pontefract Academies Trust, stated: “The King's School and Pontefract Academies Trust are very supportive of the proposal.

"Whilst in the early days, the proposed new facilities can be enjoyed by children and young people, not just from The King's School but also from other Pontefract schools and wider sports groups across the town.

"Increasing physical activity and healthy lifestyles are something that we, as a group of schools, have always tried to promote, and the proposal to strengthen facilities for the local schools and the local community is a force for good.”

Cyril Jones, founder and club chairman of Pontefract Athletics Club, said: “I am delighted that athletics facilities are being provided at the Kings School.

"This will enable the club to increase its membership base and it will also enable the club to retain athletes.

"The top class facilities will provide opportunities for both the athletes and the club to develop in a way that has not previously been possible.”

The proposed project will create modern, high quality athletics facilities designed to support both grassroots participation and competitive sport. Once completed, the track will provide a first class environment for schools, local clubs, and aspiring athletes across the district.

By providing access to professional standard facilities, the new track will help nurture talent, promote healthier lifestyles and inspire the next generation to get active.

Councillors backing the scheme highlighted the long term benefits for children and young people. The facility will not only enhance physical education provision at The King’s School but will also be available for wider community use.

The proposed development is expected to:

Increase participation in athletics and physical activity among young people.

Support local sports clubs and school competitions.

Provide pathways for talented athletes to progress.

Improve health and wellbeing outcomes across the community.

The councillors have declared that they are strongly committed to giving children and young people the best possible start in life combining opportunity, aspiration, and access to high quality facilities close to home.

If taken forward, the facility would aim to enhance opportunities for physical activity and athletics participation in Pontefract, particularly for young people and local sports groups.

Councillors backing the proposal are Coun George Ayre, Coun Julie Craig, Coun Brian Mayhew, Coun Helen Antcliffe, Coun Hannah Appleyard and Coun Clive Tennant.
