Leeds trio flying the flag as World Triathlon Championship Series returns to London

The World Triathlon Championship Series returns to London this weekend.

The city of Leeds will have a three-pronged attack as the World Triathlon Championship Series returns to London on Saturday for the first time since 2015.

Beth Potter, Jessica Fullagar and Jack Willis will be flying the flag for Great Britain but also Leeds as 100 of the world’s leading triathletes line up on the start line.

Britain has 13 athletes competing; the women’s race starting at 2.30pm and the men’s event at 4.15pm.

Potter leads the current world standings and wears number one as she looks to maintain her strong start to the season.

After a first and two second place finishes this year, Potter came sixth last time out in Hamburg, before helping the team pick up a fantastic bronze medal in the mixed team relay World Championships.

Double Olympic medallist spearheads Leeds charge

Potter won two bronze medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the individual and mixed team relay events and was World Champion in 2023.

Fullagar was also part of the mixed relay team that won bronze in the mixed team relay World Championships in Hamburg. She had a great end to the season last year, finishing fifth at the World Championships and then winning the Noosa Triathlon in Australia soon after.

Fullagar has been consistent in the WTCS this year, racing three times and finishing 11th, 11th and 12th and will be hoping to break into the top ten in London.

This will be her first individual WTCS race in the UK, although she did compete in the relay in Sunderland back in 2023.

Wills, meanwhile, finished inside the top twenty at the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Wollongong last year and came eighth in his only completed WTCS race this season in Yokohama, his best finish at the WTCS level.

The WTCS London event is part of the third London T100 Triathlon weekend, where 5,300 amateurs will swim, bike and run around the capital.

Tomorrow's racing is being broadcast live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, with the women’s race starting at 2.30pm and the men’s event at 4.15pm.
