Yorkshire's Charlie Manby defies double trouble to shock Ricky Evans at World Darts Championship
West Yorkshire’s Charlie Manby defied double trouble to storm into the last 16 of the PDC World Darts Championship this afternoon (Monday).
The 20-year-old rising star, who lives between Huddersfield and Wakefield, recovered from 1-0 and 2-1 down in sets to beat ‘Rapid’ Ricky Evans 4-2 in a third round clash at Alexandra Palace, in north London.
Manby, a bricklayer who is in his first World Championship and has yet to gain a tour card, landed 11 maximum 180s and averaged 89.5 with every three darts thrown, despite missing an incredible 41 of his 54 attempts at double - a success rate of just 24 per cent.
‘Champagne Charlie’ is now guaranteed at least £60,000 prize money and will face third-favourite Gian van Veen, the reigning world youth champion, tomorrow (Tuesday) in the last 16.

Manby, who qualified through the PDC’s development tour, told Sky Sports: “It’s a great feeling. It was frustrating, I should have won the first set, but it’s first to four and I think I recovered quite well and got my confidence back. I knew if my doubles came I’d come out on the right side.”
He added: “I like Gian, like the way he plays, but I am just waiting for my A-game to come, I’ll be here all the time if it does.”
Evans held his throw to take the opening set and, after Manby levelled, won all three legs in the third to move 2-1 ahead, but the Yorkshiremen then took control, winning nine of the final 12 legs and sealing victory on double-16.
