Bradford Bulls boss wants Leeds Rhinos to teach his side a Super League lesson in Cameron Smith testimonial

Saturday’s Cameron Smith testimonial game at Leeds Rhinos will give promoted Bradford Bulls a first taste of what they are up against this season.

Bulls finished third in the Championship last term, but secured a return to Betfred Super League - for the first time since 2014 - through their score on the IMG grading system. They won a pre-season game at Doncaster earlier this month, but haven’t yet faced top-flight opposition.

Explaining what he wants from the match, against a team they’ll face three times in the league this year, coach Kurt Haggerty said: “To learn more about the squad [and] look at what different balances look like at different times in the game. We’ll learn a lot. I’m excited to see how we look against a very good Super League team and especially how we look under fatigue at Super League level.”

He insisted: “We’re focusing on ourselves, not particularly Leeds, so we’ve got some things we want to test against a really good Super League team. Ultimately, it is still a trial game and we're still leading into the Challenge Cup and round one so I won’t be putting too much pressure on the team. I want to go out there, play and be competitive.”

Rhinos will be close to full strength at the start, but also plan to give game time to some fringe and young players. Haggerty has spoken to Leeds coach Brad Arthur about that and added: “They are a fantastic team. They are well-coached, they’ve got some world-class players, so it’s a great chance for our lads to come up against them and see them and feel what it’s like to play at that level We had a brief conversation in regards to what Brad’s plan is and what my plan is and we’re both very aligned in making sure we both get out of the game what we want.”
