Castleford Tigers bring in forward from Super League rivals Leigh Leopards as ex-Hull FC star moves other way
Castleford Tigers have signed an international front-rower from Leigh Leopards, with one of their own pack men moving the other way on a long-term deal.
Former NRL Grand Finalist Lazarus Vaalepu, 27, has joined Tigers on loan until the end of this season. Castleford have released Jack Ashworth with immediate effect, allowing him to pen a deal with Leigh until the end of 2028.
Australian-born Vaalepu came through the Canberra Raiders’ development system and made his NRL debut for Melbourne Storm two years ago. A substitute in that season’s Grand Final loss to Penrith Panthers, he was capped twice by Samoa during their 2024 Test series against England.
He signed for Leigh midway through the current campaign and has made four Betfred Super League appearances, as well as playing twice in the Championship on loan for Oldham. Tigers director of rugby Chris Chester said: “Lazarus is a big body and someone that moves well.

“He will give us some much-needed punch through the middle third of the field. Lazarus will come straight into the 21-man squad for our game against St Helens on Saturday.”
Ashworth, 31, moved to Tigers from Hull FC last autumn on a two-year contract, but made only 10 appearances and had a stint on loan at Doncaster. A Tigers statement today (Tuesday) said: “We'd like to thank Jack for his efforts and wish him well for the future.”
Leopards’ director of rugby Andrew Henderson, a former Castleford captain, said: “Jack is a tough, experienced player who knows what it takes at Super League level. He brings physicality and a real team-first mentality

“When we were made aware of Jack’s availability we felt now was the right time to bring him in. He is exactly the type of competitor who adds versatility, strengthening our middle unit and providing cover on an edge for the run-in this year and beyond.
“We’re pleased to add him to the Leopards pack, strengthening our depth immediately and providing strong competition for places. We welcome Jack to our club and we look forward to seeing what he will bring to the group.”
