Castleford Tigers legend Danny Orr makes rugby league return: ex-Wigan Warriors man joins Championship club

Castleford Tigers legend Danny Orr is back in rugby league.

Betfred Championship side Keighley Cougars today announced Orr as a new member of their coaching staff. The former Tigers, Wigan Warriors and Harlequins RL play-maker has been out of the game since leaving Salford Red Devils, where he was assistant-coach, at the end of the 2022 season.

Cougars have not confirmed the 47-year-old’s role, but a statement on social media said: “Please welcome Danny Orr to the Cougar family. Danny brings a wealth of experience to assist and work alongside our new head coach and backroom team.”

Orr began and ended his playing career at hometown club Castleford before moving on to the coaching staff there. He had a spell as caretaker-boss in 2013 and joined Salford seven years later. His son Iwan Orr played for Leeds Rhinos reserves and Hunslet, as well as England Universities.

Cougars last week announced ex-Hunslet player and assistant-coach Danny Burton as their new interim-boss, after Alan Kilshaw left to take charge at Championship rivals Oldham. Keighley kick off their season at home to Goole Vikings on Sunday.
