Castleford Tigers news: season over for ex-Leeds Rhinos man as contract situation addressed

A hamstring injury appears to have ended Castleford Tigers star Ashton Golding’s season.

The former Leeds Rhinos man joined Tigers in February, three months after leaving Huddersfield Giants. He hobbled out of last week’s 52-14 drubbing at Wakefield Trinity and coach Ryan Carr today (Wednesday) confirmed: “He has done a pretty bad job on his hammy, poor Ash.”

Speaking at his preview press conference, ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Warrington Wolves, Carr said: “It is a shame because he is such a team-first guy, he has played in every position for us and thrown himself at everything we’ve asked him to.

“We are trying to get around him and make sure he is all right, but it is a pretty bad hamstring injury. It will most likely [rule him out for the season].”

Golding is contracted until the end of this year. Of the potential for a new deal, Carr added: “Chezzy [director of rugby Chris Chester] does a lot of the roster management stuff. I am more focused on making whoever’s available this week the best version of themselves and making sure we prepare the best we can.

“We still have a fair bit of recruitment and retention to work through and we’ll get to that in the coming weeks, but he is a great team guy - he has played from hooker all the way to centre and every position in between. That goes to show his versatility and not once did he shy away from the contest, so I’ll always appreciate that from him. We know that’s what we’re going to get from him.”

Three-quarter Semi Valemei, who missed last week’s game with a similar issue, could also be facing a long-term layoff, but Carr hasn’t ruled out a return for prop George Lawler this week. A groin injury kept him out of the defeat at Wakefield and Car said: “He has got potential, it is a week to week proposition and we’ll see how he pulls up through his return to play protocol.”
