Ex-Leeds Rhinos ace announces retirement: Tom Briscoe to bow out after final Headingley appearance for Hull FC

Record-breaking former Leeds Rhinos star Tom Briscoe will hang up his boots after a final appearance at AMT Headingley.

The Hull FC winger has announced his retirement at the end of this season and his last game is set to be away to Rhinos in two weeks’ time. The Featherstone-born 36-year-old scored 93 tries in 208 games for Leeds from 2014-2022 and had a testimonial in his final season with the club.

A member of the treble-winning side 11 years ago, he scored a record five tries in Rhinos’ Wembley victory against Hull KR that season. That was one of his three Challenge Cup final wins with Leeds and he collected a similar number of Grand Final rings.

Having joined Rhinos from Hull, he moved back there in 2024 after a two-season stint with Leigh Leopards which included another Challenge Cup triumph. Capped 12 times by England, he has scored 232 tries in 471 career appearances.

Briscoe, who recently completed a PhD in sports science at Leeds Beckett University, is yet to decide what he will do next, but said he has “a few options lined up”. He stated: “It’s a decision that has been coming for a while, but it’s been really tough to come out and publicly announce my decision to retire after 19 years.

“I feel like this is the right decision for me and my family and I’m ready for the next chapter in my life now. It has been an amazing journey - the highest of highs you can achieve in this sport and some tough moments along the way too.

“I’m incredibly proud of what I have achieved and I’m privileged to have been in the position I’ve been in in this sport for so long. The last game of my career will be between Hull and Leeds, two clubs I’ve got the most history with. It feels like the stars have aligned a little bit.”
