Ex-Leeds Rhinos loan man finds new club after Wakefield Trinity exit

Scotland international Matty Russell has signed for a new club following his departure from Wakefield Trinity.

Russell joined Trinity from Warrington Wolves ahead of the 2025 season and scored six tries in seven appearances, but was hampered by a knee injury and not kept on when his contract expired last month. He has now joined Betfred Championship outfit Oldham on a one-year deal.

The outside-back featured once on loan for Leeds Rhinos in 2024 and has also played in Betfred Super League with Wigan Warriors, Toronto Wolfpack, Leigh, Toulouse Olympique and Hull FC. Russell, 32, told his new club’s website: “Oldham is a perfect fit. I haven’t been able to show my full potential with my knee problem, but it has all been fixed now. My body feels the best it has ever been in my career and I feel my best years are still ahead of me.

“In the games I played last year, even when I was in and out of the team, it was probably the best I have played for a good few years. I had a few other offers, but Oldham stood out the most. I feel I will be able to play my best rugby here and help the team thrive to where they want to be.”
