Ex-Leeds Rhinos star lands new coaching role at NRL champions Sydney Roosters

A player released by Leeds Rhinos two years ago has landed a new coaching role at Australian champions Sydney Roosters.

Aussie centre Paul Momirovski joined Leeds from Roosters ahead of the 2024 season, but was let go half way through his two-year contract. The move cleared space on Rhinos’ overseas quota allowing them to sign superstar winger Maika Sivo from Parramatta Eels.

At the time, the Yorkshire Evening Post revealed Momirovski was considering taking a position on Roosters’ backroom staff. After a spell playing in France for Lezignan, the 30-year-old hung up his boots and returned to the Sydney outfit as coach of their under-17s.

He was a rapid success, guiding them to this year’s Harold Matthews Cup Grand Final where they were beaten by Newcastle Knights. Reports in Australia say the ex-Leeds man has now stepped up to take charge of Roosters’ second-string New South Wales Cup team.

His previous role has been taken by former Hull KR captain Shaun Kenny-Dowall, who guided Knights’ under-17s to this year’s title win against Roosters. Momirovski scored seven tries in 24 games for Rhinos and also featured in the NRL for Wests Tigers, Melbourne Storm and Penrith Panthers, where he was a Grand Final winner in 2021.
