From Featherstone to Florida, how the YEP has been with Leeds Rhinos every step of the way

The Yorkshire Evening Post and Leeds Rhinos go together like Smith and Atkinson or Burrow and McGuire.

Edition number one hit the streets in 1890, the year the present Leeds club was formed and the first ball was kicked at Headingley Stadium. Since then, the two have gone hand in hand. From rugby league’s birth in 1895 to the Super League era, which began 101 years later, the YEP has been at the heart of reporting on one of the city’s great sporting icons.

The way games are covered has changed, but the YEP remains the best source of Rhinos news. Back in 1937, it was the YEP who revealed the first transfer between the southern and northern hemispheres to be arranged by telephone call, when brilliant Aussie stand-off Vic Hey was tempted to Leeds.

Our shocked reporter wrote of how Leeds’ secretary George Ibbotson “was able to hear sufficiently clearly all that was said by the club’s Australian agent, despite a pronounced Australian mode of speech’.

Transfers are easier to arrange nowadays, but - whether it’s a superstar from abroad or a local kid made good - you’ll still read all about them here. From Manchester to Melbourne, Featherstone to Florida and Catalans to Cardiff, the YEP has led the charge, covering Rhinos matches, news and interviews all over the globe.

There have been highs and lows on and off the pitch. The glory days of the 1960s and 70s were followed by lean times over the following two decades, before the club’s greatest era between 2004 and 2017, when eight championships were won. Throughout it all, the Evening Post remains committed to providing the most in-depth coverage of Rhinos and rugby league in West Yorkshire. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading it as much as we have bringing it to you.
