Good news for Leeds Rhinos as Man of Steel nominee Lachie Miller contract clause activated

In a break to the gloom, Leeds Rhinos have announced one of their star players is staying on for an extra season.

A clause in Betfred Super League Man of Steel nominee Lachie Miller’s contract has been activated, keeping him at Rhinos until the end of 2028. Chris Hankinson’s new deal, which expires at the same time, was announced yesterday (Wednesday).

The arrangements are a welcome boost for Rhinos after injury news overshadowed the build up to tomorrow’s play-off semi-final against Warrington Wolves. Ash Handley and Jack Bird have joined Miller, who suffered season-ending hamstring damage three weeks ago, on the casualty list and Maika Sivo is a major doubt to face Warrington.

Miller was contracted until next autumn under a deal signed last year. The Australian full-back said: “I’m really happy to have agreed the extension and to know I’ll be staying at Leeds through to at least the end of 2028. I’ve really enjoyed my time here.

“The club has made me feel very welcome and there’s a great group of players and staff who are all working towards the same goal. The support from the Rhinos fans has been unreal and playing at AMT Headingley is something I’ve really enjoyed. I’m looking forward to spending the next few years here and hopefully we can give the fans plenty to be excited about.”

Miller added: “I’m gutted not to be out there with the boys on Friday, but I will be there cheering them on and doing everything I can to support them. I think Fergie McCormack is a great prospect and I am excited to see him in action. Having worked with him closely, I am confident he will thrive in a game like this.”

Coach Brad Arthur stated: “Lachie is an important part of our squad and we’re really pleased he’ll be staying at Leeds. He brings a lot of energy to the team and has genuine attacking ability.

“He can create something from nothing, but his effort and work rate are just as important to us. I think he would be the first to say he is constantly learning and finding ways to improve his game and that is a brilliant attitude to have from one of our senior players.”

Sporting Director Ian Blease added: “When Lachie first arrived he was a player with plenty of ability and an exciting skill set, but he has also shown the character and attitude we want within our squad. Lachie is an important part of our plans moving forward and securing his future is another positive step as we continue to build a squad that can compete consistently at the top end of the Betfred Super League.”
