Here's why Leeds Rhinos ace Cameron Smith is joining Wakefield Trinity as move officially confirmed
Leeds Rhinos loose-forward Cameron Smith has revealed the ambition behind his move to rivals Wakefield Trinity next year.
Trinity this evening (Wednesday) confirmed Smith’s signing on a four-year contract beginning in 2027. That came a day after Rhinos announced the loose-forward will leave them when his contract expires this autumn.
The 27-year-old, from Castleford, came through Rhinos’ academy system to make his debut 10 years ago. He was among Leeds’ try scorers during a 46-16 win against Bradford Bulls in his testimonial match last Saturday.
Smith has played 167 first team games for Leeds and was appointed captain in 2024. He was co-skipper with Ash Handley last year, but lost the duty in pre-season after injuries restricted him to only 12 appearances during 2025.

Smith, whose Trinity deal runs until 2030, said: “I’m really excited to be joining Wakefield next season. It’s a club with huge ambition and a clear vision for the future.
“I’m looking forward to being part of what’s being built here. However, until the end of the season my full focus remains on giving everything I have for Leeds and finishing my time here the right way.”
Trinity feel Smith will add experience to a relatively young squad and director of rugby Ste Mills described his signing as “a huge statement for us”. He said: “He is a proven leader, a relentless competitor and someone who embodies everything we want this team to stand for.
“Cameron has been outstanding at Leeds and to secure a player of his calibre speaks volumes about the direction we are heading in. He is hungry, he’s driven and he’s coming here to win. We believe he will raise standards across the entire group, both on and off the field and we are incredibly proud to welcome him to the club.”
