Leeds Rhinos 'feeling better and ready to go': boss Brad Arthur identifies 'easy fixes' ahead of York Knights

An in-depth review of last week’s defeat has left Leeds Rhinos feeling “a lot better and ready to go”, coach Brad Arthur says.

Sunday will see Rhinos make their first visit to York Knights’ LNER Community Stadium, having had a long turnaround from last Thursday’s 20-16 home loss to Leigh Leopards. That ended Leeds’ 100 per cent record at AMT Headingley this year and they’ll be off the top of the Betfred Super League table if Wigan Warriors beat Wakefield Trinity on Friday.

However, Rhinos reviewed the Leigh game today (Wednesday) and speaking at his weekly preview press conference, Arthur insisted they came out of that meeting with plenty of positives. “We’ve done our review, we feel a lot better from that and we are ready to go,” Arthur stated.

He insisted: “We like to win, we’ve become accustomed to it and we are enjoying it. Sometimes I don’t know what’s worse, if you play absolutely terrible and don’t win, it might be easier to fix.

“We actually played well as a team, we just, individually, got a couple of moments wrong here or there which hurt us. It’s always good to put it to bed - we’ve looked at it and seen we were right in the game. We could have won it, we should have won it.”

Arthur stressed: “We dominated field position and dominated the game, really. In every stat we won, except for the scoreboard. There’s plenty of positives to come out of it, we still looked like the Leeds Rhinos team we wanted to; we’ve come accustomed to scoring tries easily and it just didn’t happen for us and there’s a couple of easy tidy-ups and fixes for it.”

Though Rhinos were caught out on their edges several times, Arthur insisted: “This sounds silly, but we defended extremely well for the majority of the game. Four or five concentration lapses or not getting into position early or guys trying to solve a problem on their own really hurt us.

“A couple of system errors resulted in four tries, it’s as simple as that. Outside of that, we defended really well, they found it hard to find metres against us, we ran for 1,000 metres and only missed 18 tackles or something to their 56.

“Defensively we did a great job except we came up with two bad reads on two shifts on our left-edge. We have been really good on our left-edge so we just put that down to a bad day. We got a few things wrong, but we have to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
