Leeds Rhinos news: Cameron Smith set for move to near-neighbours Wakefield Trinity
Loose-forward Cameron Smith is set to leave Leeds Rhinos when his contract expires this autumn.
Smith, who made his debut 10 years ago and had a testimonial game against Bradford Bulls yesterday (Saturday), is understood to be heading to West Yorkshire rivals Wakefield Trinity for 2027. The 27-year-old has been free to talk to other clubs since December 1.
If the move is confirmed, he will be the third member of the current squad to sign elsewhere for next term after the Perth Bears-bound duo of centre Harry Newman and second-row James McDonnell. Smith was Rhinos’ co-captain with Ash Handley last year, but lost the duty this pre-season after injuries limited him to just 12 appearances in 2025, eight as a substitute. He also dropped down the squad order, from 13 to 17.

Saturday’s 46-16 win against Bulls was Smith’s comeback game following a back problem and he impressed, scoring a try and two goals and having a spell in the halves after starting the game at loose-forward. Rhinos may look to recruit, but have candidates to replace Smith from within their existing group.
Veteran Kallum Watkins is expected to activate a clause in his contract keeping him at Leeds next year and played regularly at loose-forward last term, on occasions keeping Smith out of the starting side after his return from injury. Jarrod O’Connor, who is close to agreeing a new contract, can play at the back of the scrum – where he had a spell on Saturday – as well as hooker. New number 13 Keenan Palasia is another option after recently signing a long-term contract, as is rising star Presley Cassell.
