Leeds Rhinos news: James McDonnell's '100 per cent' vow in first words as move to NRL Perth Bears confirmed
Dream Team forward James McDonnell has made a pledge to Leeds Rhinos after his move to NRL club Perth Bears was confirmed.
McDonnell’s departure at the end of this season was revealed by Rhinos two days ago and Perth this morning (Monday) announced his signing on a two-year deal. Bears will enter the southern hemisphere competition in 2027.
The 25-year-old second-rower’s contract expires this autumn and he is the second Leeds player to sign for Perth, after England centre Harry Newman. He told Bears’ website: “It has been an ambition of mine to play in the NRL and I’m absolutely delighted to be given that chance with the Perth Bears.

“The NRL is the toughest competition in the world, and I can’t wait to get over to Western Australia and test myself against the best of the best. It’s great to know Harry Newman and a few other lads from the Super League will be joining me. My focus is on giving 100 per cent for the Rhinos this year, but it’s exciting to think that in a year’s time I’ll have the chance to be a part of history.”
Test legend Mal Meninga stood down from his role as coach of Australia to take charge at Perth, who have also announced the signing of rookie outside-back Chris Vea’ila from Cronulla Sharks. Meninga said: “I’ve kept an eye on McDonnell for a few years now and I thought he really went to another level in 2025. I’m confident he will develop more this season and I’m excited to see what he can bring to the Bears.”
Wigan-born McDonnell joined Rhinos from his hometown club ahead of the 2023 season. The Ireland international was a member of England’s training squad for last year’s Ashes Test series and was selected for the 2025 Betfred Super League Dream Team after an ever-present season with Rhinos.
