Leeds Rhinos Nostalgia: On this day in history
Our man Peter Smith delves through the YEP archives to find out what happened on this day in the history of Leeds Rhinos.
1981

David Heselwood ran in a hat-trick of tries in a 20-17 home win over St Helens 40 years ago today.
Leeds scored six tries to three, with David Heron, Neil Hague and Terry Naylor getting the others, but managed only one goal, by Kevin Dick.

1975
Stand-off Mel Mason made his Leeds debut in an 11-10 home defeat of St Helens at Headingley.
A fourth goal from John Holmes, 10 minutes from time, was the winner. Bob Haigh scored Leeds’ try.
1969

Half a century ago, holders Leeds battled to a 17-12 win over Halifax at Thrum Hall in the Challenge Cup first round.
John Langley, Ray Batten, Alan Smith, Bernard Watson and Mick Clark scored Leeds’ tries, with Bev Risman managing only one goal.
1896
Wakefield Trinity visited Headingley for the first time under Northern Union rules and were beaten 8-3, Leeds scoring a try and goal to Trinity’s lone try.
A goal and a try was worth five points, an unconverted try three points, a penalty goal three points and a dropped goal (or one kicked from a fair catch) four points.
