Only three players - second-row James McDonnell (ankle), centre Max Simpson (knee) and outside-back Alfie Edgell (quad muscle) - will definitely miss the Betfred Challenge Cup third round tie at Widnes Vikings on Saturday, February 7. But, with Leeds beginning their Super League campaign just six days later away to Leigh Leopards, Arthur will be reluctant to risk anyone who has even a slight niggle.
Centre Ash Handley is in that category with a groin issue, though he’s expected to feature against Leigh. Prop Jeremiah Mata’utia (knee) is unlikely to be available next week, but winger Chris Hankinson could play despite suffering a broken nose in Cameron Smith’s testimonial game last weekend.
Prop Keenan Palasia is back in training after a knee injury, but Rhinos may opt to give winger Maika Sivo another week or two before he returns from the anterior cruciate ligament rupture he suffered 12 months ago. As a Championship side, Widnes are underdogs, but will have three competitive games under their belt and Leeds can’t afford to take them lightly, so how could they line up? Here’s a prediction.

1. Wing: Lachie Miller

2. Wing: Chris Hankinson
Will feature - assuming his broken nose recovers in time - and probably on a wing, though he could potentially move to centre. Photo: Allan McKenzie/SWpix.com

3. Centre: Harry Newman
Leeds have issues in the three-quarter, but Newman is fit and will presumably start. Photo: Allan McKenzie/SWpix.com

4. Centre: Ned McCormack
It might be wise not to risk Ash Handley and McCormack is an able replacement. Photo: steve riding

5. Wing: Ryan Hall

6. Stand-off: Brodie Croft
Rhinos have no experienced specialist cover in the halves so it’s highly likely Croft and Jake Connor will feature. Photo: Steve Riding
