Wakefield Trinity coach Daryl Powell comments on Emre Guler ban ahead of semi-final at Wigan Warriors

Wakefield Trinity coach Daryl Powell admits prop Emre Guler’s ban is “disappointing”, but insists he’ll select from an “outstanding group” for Saturday’s semi-final at Wigan Warriors.

Guler will begin a three-match layoff this weekend when Trinity aim to reach their first Betfred Super League title decider. The former St George-Illawarra Dragons forward was suspended for two games after being sent-off for punching during last Friday’s play-off victory against Leigh Leopards.

He challenged the match review panel’s verdict, but another match was added to the ban when his appeal was rejected by an RFL tribunal. Speaking at his press conference ahead of the huge fixture on Saturday, Powell conceded: “It’s disappointing, obviously.

“It’s heat of the moment. I felt like it was more of a palm when you look at it under close inspection, but we presented the evidence and obviously we didn’t win that [appeal] so it is what it is.

“I think we’ve got an outstanding squad, a group of players who are ready to go on Saturday and there’s always going to be players who don’t get through for whatever reason, injury or other things. For this to happen last week, after we’d brought Emre over, is obviously disappointing, but we just have to move on and we’ll have a fair crack at this game.”

Powell will announce a 21-man squad tomorrow. He said Trinity came through last week’s impressive win with no major injury concerns and added: “There won’t be too many changes to the team, really.

“We’ll put a squad out when we need to and then I’ve got a couple of calls to make on who’s going to slot where. There’s some potential options in a couple of different positions, but it’s not going to change too much.”
