Wakefield Trinity hopeful over injured players as Castleford Tigers consider Magic Weekend team changes

Wakefield Trinity could have some players back from injury in Sunday’s Magic Weekend derby, while team changes are being considered by opponents Castleford Tigers.

Trinity were without several first-choice players for their last-gasp 29-23 win against Betfred Super League’s bottom club Huddersfield Giants. Coach Daryl Powell said: “We came out of that all right.

“There’s a couple of bumps and bruises, but we haven’t got anything major and we’ve got some potential players to come back. Caius [Faatili] didn’t play at the weekend and he will be available.

“Matty Storton has a chance of being back, but some of the outside-backs probably won’t be. Matty had a minor groin injury a couple of weeks back. It was a little bit more than precautionary, but not too bad. Caius has just had an ankle [issue] and I decided just to rotate him and give him a bit of a breather.”

Winger Lachlan Walmsley played in the reserves on Monday and could come into contention and Powell is hopeful Jay Pitts will feature despite an injury which forced him off the field during last Sunday’s match. “He’s all right,” Powell said.

“He could have come back on. That’s something that has been bothering him - everybody talks about how old he is, he gets a bit of stick and when you are a little bit older as a player and more experienced you’ve got a few bits and bobs that cause you strife.

“He has an ankle that if he gets in certain positions causes him trouble, It might be two or three times a year it happens to him. I think he will be sweet. I don’t think he’ll train on Wednesday, but I think he’ll be fine.”

Tigers boss Ryan Carr plans to delay team selection until as late as possible, but changes are possible after last Friday’s 20-14 home loss to York Knights. He said: “We’ll see how a few people pull up and there’s a few people knocking on the door, trying to force their way into the team.

“There’s a few players who aren’t in the team at the moment and are either playing reserves or around the 21-man squad. We’ll have to review last week’s game pretty thoroughly and figure out who trains the best through the week. Whoever trains the best gets picked.”
