Wakefield Trinity news: overseas duo signed with immediate effect to boost injury-hit squad

Wakefield Trinity have added two overseas forwards to their injury-hit squad ahead of this week’s transfer deadline.

Australian-born second-rower Zac Lipowicz has joined Trinity from Catalans Dragons on a deal until the end of the season. And NRL club St George-Illawarra Dragons today confirmed prop Emre Guler, who was due to link up with Trinity in 2027, has been granted an early release allowing him to move to Wakefield this year.

The West Yorkshire club released overseas forward Seth Nikotemo last week for personal reasons and Jay Pitts (biceps) and Isaiah Vagana (shoulder) have both joined their casualty list. Lipowicz, 24, made one NRL appearance for Penrith Panthers last year and has played 26 times for Catalans in 2026.

He said: “I’m excited to be joining Wakefield Trinity. The club has shown great ambition over the past few years. They’ve played some incredible rugby league so far in 2026 and I can’t wait to meet the boys and get stuck in until the end of the season.”

Trinity coach Daryl Powell added: “After losing several players to injury over the last 10 days it has become really important for us to strengthen our numbers as we move towards the crucial part of the season. We were made aware of Zac’s availability and moved quickly to bring him on board for the remainder of the season. He’s had a really strong season at Catalans and we believe will fit superbly into our squad.”

Trinity announced the signing of Guler in June on a three-year deal beginning next season. However, St George today confirmed they have granted his request for an early release, allowing him to move to Wakefield with immediate effect.

The 28-year-old has featured 126 times in the NRL, 33 of his appearances coming following his move from Canberra Raiders to the Dragons ahead of the 2025 campaign. St George’s chief operating officer Ben Creagh said: “Emre has been a valued member of our playing group and has handled himself professionally throughout his time at the Dragons. We thank Emre for his contribution to the club and wish him and his family all the best for the next chapter.”
