Why returning Wakefield Trinity star Caius Faatili is targeting Magic Weekend repeat v Castleford Tigers

Fleet-footed Wakefield Trinity forward Caius Faatili is hoping for another magic moment in Liverpool on Sunday.

Faatili produced one of the highlights of last year’s Magic Weekend, at St James’ Park, Newcastle, when he weaved and stepped clear from inside Trinity’s half to score a stunning long-range try against Castleford Tigers. The venue is different this year as Magic makes its debut at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, but the opposition are the same and Faatili would love a repeat.

“In a game of rugby league you never know what’s going to happen,” Faatili said. “Fingers crossed I can get over the line, but I have been asked about that try a lot and I never really have an answer.

“It was just a spur of the moment-type thing, I got in a bit of space and did the right things, I guess. It was definitely a highlight for me since I moved over here, especially seeing all the Wakey fans celebrating. It was an awesome moment.”

Faatili will play on Sunday after sitting out last weekend’s nervy last-gasp win at home to bottom club Huddersfield Giants and is happy to be back on the field for one of his favourite events in the season after a minor injury scare. He explained: “My ankle has been playing up for about a month now. It’s not too bad, they just gave me a wee rest [last Sunday].

“Magic round is a good atmosphere and a good initiative; I am always excited to play, but Magic Weekend adds something special. We are bringing back the Wildcats so that’s pretty exciting as well, so I am looking forward to it.”

Trinity - who will wear a retro kit harking back to the days when they were known as Wakefield Wildcats - are fourth in the Betfred Super League table, level on points with third-placed Wigan Warriors and St Helens who are fifth. Those sides meet in Sunday’s closing game so the derby against Tigers, refereed by Aaron Moore, is an opportunity for Wakefield to strengthen their hold on a play-off spot.

Faatili stressed: “We are still a team that’s growing. To see where we are at at the moment, I guess we are pretty happy to be in the top-four. I feel like if we can find some form coming into these later rounds we will be tough to handle come the finals.

“We have got to take our hats off to our owners. Matty [Ellis] has done so much for the club, putting money into facilities and even the players. There’s an awesome buzz around Wakey and we are just going up and up.

“I think they sort of put in a five-year plan that we are ahead of at the moment, but we are never really happy with anything. That’s what the best teams do - you are never happy, you always want to grow more and that’s what we are trying to do.

“We are trying to build something good. We have put the stepping stones in and if we can be there or thereabouts at the end of the year we will be excited for it.”
