'World war chant' leads to Leeds Rhinos fans behaviour warning
A complaint over a chant at last week’s game in France led to Leeds Rhinos issuing a behaviour warning to fans, the Yorkshire Evening Post can reveal.
Rhinos this week urged supporters to avoid “inappropriate and unacceptable” chanting at future matches and warned the current Betfred Super League leaders could face financial penalties if antisocial behaviour continues, home or away. A club statement stressed: “Leeds Rhinos are proud of our supporters and want to ensure we maintain our reputation. All supporters, whether at home or away, are governed by the RFL’s various codes of conduct and regulation and inappropriate behaviour could lead to financial sanctions for the club.”
The YEP understands one complaint was received by the governing body following Rhinos’ 28-6 victory against Catalans Dragons at Stade Gilbert Brutus, in Perpignan, last Saturday. An RL Commercial spokesperson said: “At the recent away match in Catalans a minority of Leeds fans engaged in a chant that related to the Second World War that has been condemned across sport as it is offensive to other nationalities. These types of chants are not welcome in a sport like rugby league that prides itself on inclusivity.”
Rhinos aren’t believed to be facing any punishment at this stage, though that could change if more incidents occur.
