'Brilliant' news for Leeds residents as obstructive poles removed from footpath by busy Kirkstall road

Leeds residents have welcomed the removal of an obstructive street sign that has been forcing many to have to step into a busy road.

The sign on Beecroft Street towards the junction with the A65 Commercial Road has been causing problems, particularly for those with mobility issues, due to the two poles blocking the pavement.

Kirkstall resident and community activist Stuart Long said that the issue had been flagged to him “numerous times” and that he raised it with the council in March, saying: “The simple request was ‘can we get rid of them?’.

“It’s been sat waiting for someone to come and solve but they have finally got around to it this week.”

The traffic directions were painted onto the road before the signage was removed on Tuesday morning (November 11).

Mr Long said: “Everyone’s said the same thing. It’s brilliant for the area and so much needed.

“It’s made it much easier and safer for everyone especially those parents with pushchairs and prams, as well as wheelchair users or mobility scooters to access the footpath without having to step into the busy carriageway. The A65 is not exactly slow-moving traffic.”

He added: “Now that they have removed the sign I have asked the council to trim the hedge to make it even easier to get past.

A Leeds City Council Spokesperson said: "After receiving feedback from the community, we took action to remove the street sign on Beecroft Road, and replace it with information on the road surface.

“This means that road users still have access to the information they need to get into lane, and the footway is now more accessible for walking and wheeling."
