Getdown Services turn Leeds gig into a joyful, quiche-fuelled spectacle

I’ve been to plenty of gigs in my time, but I can safely say I’ve never witnessed a mid-set quiche-eating competition.

Bristol-based duo Getdown Services have enjoyed a remarkable year by any measure: regular spins on BBC Radio 6 Music, slots at major festivals, a sold-out UK tour and, on this particular night, two back-to-back shows at Leeds’ beloved Brudenell Social Club.

Their sound is a gleeful jumble of post-punk, funk and disco, stitched together with kitchen-sink lyricism about life’s trivialities - rent, food and, occasionally, skidmarks. It’s a formula that shouldn’t work, yet somehow does, and fans appear more than happy to devour it.

Childhood friends Josh Law and Ben Sadler stroll on stage to Status Quo’s Whatever You Want, immediately launching into a casual back-and-forth with the crowd. Only after a few minutes of banter do they strike up their first number, Head Down for the Conversation, which goes down a storm with the 400-odd fans who’ve opted for the duo’s late showing.

Fan favourites Get Back Jamie and Crisps spark some of the loudest singalongs of the night, powered by infectious funk grooves and shout-along lines like: “Jamie says that dinner takes fifteen minutes / I say get back Jamie / I’ve only got five,” and the wonderfully daft, “I’ve got choccy in my pocket / I’ve got bits.”

What truly sets Getdown Services apart, though, is their commitment to deadpan humour and gleeful absurdity. Midway through the set, Eat Quiche, Sleep, Repeat is introduced via an impromptu quiche-eating competition, pitting audience members against each other in a surreal interlude that somehow feels perfectly on-brand.

Radio 6 favourite Dog Dribble provides a triumphant finale - proof, if any were needed, that the Bristol duo can pen an outrageously catchy tune.

For all the silliness, there’s a sharp eye for the everyday running through their work. Getdown Services wrap the mundane in irresistible hooks, oddball charm and a palpable sense of fun. It’s no wonder their tickets are disappearing faster than hot cakes - and on this showing, demand is only likely to rise.
