Leeds named in the top 10 cities in the UK for music - as grassroots venues see light at end of tunnel

Grassroots music venues are finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, with the fates of some of our local dives looking hopeful.

The Treasury announced yesterday (January 27) a critical support package specifically for pubs and grassroots music venues (GMVs) in England, and after an intense backlash against proposed tax hikes, the government has stepped in with a 15% discount on business rates starting this April.

This rescue mission is being hailed by industry bodies like the Music Venue Trust as a lifeline for the "53%": the high percentage of venues that reported zero profit last year.

On top of the immediate 15% cut, bills will be frozen for a further two years, giving independent venues the breathing room they need to move from survival to true stability.

The timing couldn't be better either: the Music Venue Trust’s 2026 Annual Report, released just last week, revealed that while audience visits surged by 13% to over 21 million fans in 2025, more than half (53%) of the UK’s grassroots venues still failed to turn a profit.

The recent intervention directly addresses the "unsustainable" tax burdens cited by venue owners, potentially protecting thousands of jobs after the sector saw a 20% workforce reduction last year.

For cities like Leeds, this safety net ensures that the 70+ venues making up its local ecosystem can keep the lights on even as they operate on razor-thin profit margins of just 2.5%.

Given that the city is considered one of the top ten UK areas leading the charge for live music post-pandemic, it’s clear that our local scene is becoming a vital blueprint for how music culture can survive, and eventually thrive, against the odds.

From the unwavering community spirit at the Brudenell Social Club to the innovative programming at Belgrave Music Hall, this resilience, bolstered by the recent government intervention, provides a solid foundation for the city to climb even higher in the global rankings.

But Leeds isn't the only city making waves, as SeatPick ranked the top 10 cities by analysing data across five weighted categories: the number of music venues, upcoming concerts, and festivals (scraped from Songkick), alongside the volume of homegrown artists (AllMusic) and music-related businesses like record stores and instrument shops (Yelp and OpenStreetMap).

While global hubs like London naturally lead on sheer scale, the latest 2026 data reveals a significant shift toward regional anchor stops where grassroots culture is the primary driver of success.

Cities such as Manchester and Glasgow have outperformed their size by fostering incredibly high audience density and a sell-out culture that makes them indispensable for touring artists.

Their regional strength is bolstered by a creative ecosystem that values community over pure metrics, with places like Bristol and Leeds leading the charge in artist density and independent venue stability.
