Watch: Sound of Music star Katie Bird performs ‘The Hills Are Alive’ from Leeds hotel balcony

Leeds came alive with the Sound of Music last night as City Square filled with song

Soprano Katie Bird, who has been cast as Maria in Opera North’s upcoming production of the world-famous musical, performed The Hills Are Alive from the balcony at the front of The Queens Hotel on Friday.

Inspired by Rachel Zegler’s performance of Don’t Cry for Me Argentina outside the London Palladium, commuters and after-work drinkers were treated to the special performance twice - at 5.30pm and again at 6pm.

Speaking ahead of the performance, Opera North general director Laura Canning said she hoped the performance would inspire people to see the show, which runs at Leeds Grand Theatre from July 9 to August 1.

“The Sound of Music continues to enthral audiences wherever it’s performed, and this Made in Curve production promises to appeal to everyone who has already fallen under the story’s charm, while also engaging a whole new generation of fans who love a classic musical,” she said.

“We hope Katie’s taster performance will inspire even more people to come and join us for what promises to be a must-see show this summer.”
