Leeds film spotlighting Black men's mental health set for premiering in November
Award-winning Yorkshire journalist and screenwriter Dawn-Maria France will premiere her debut short film tackling Black men’s mental health in Leeds this November to mark Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month
A powerful new short film confronting the mental health challenges faced by Black men is set to premiere in Leeds this autumn.
Created by award-winning Yorkshire journalist, screenwriter, and mental health advocate Dawn-Maria France, The Unwavering Spirit of a Caribbean Father will premiere in the city this November to coincide with Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month.

The film weaves in real-life perspectives from members of the Leeds Connect Men’s Group to offer an authentic look at emotional wellbeing, community resilience, and breaking down lingering stigmas.
Dawn-Maria, who has formal training in mental health, science, and psychology, designed the project as a catalyst for open conversation.
Working closely with Aulson Lawrence, leader of The Connect Men’s Group, France ensured that Black men's voices and lived experiences were authentically represented throughout the narrative.
"This film is a crucial step in my mission to dismantle the barriers associated with mental health,” Dawn-Maria said. “Too many men feel they have to suffer in silence. By sharing real experiences and creating spaces for honest conversations, we can initiate meaningful change.
"Hearing their powerful stories was a privilege; I felt honoured to learn from such strong and resilient men. Their stories deserve to be heard more in the film industry."
Alongside its local premiere, the short film has been submitted to a range of film festivals to help reshape the wider narrative surrounding men’s mental health on a larger stage.
The public screening and discussion event takes place on November 5, running from 11am to 3pm at Feel Good Factor, 53 Louis Streett, Leeds, Ls7 4BP
