The day was founded in 1994 by Jodi Jill, a professional puzzle maker and newspaper columnist, with one simple goal: to share her passion for brain teasers and encourage people to take a break from their daily routines to engage their minds.
Interestingly, she chose January 29 because it was her own birthday, and what started as a small gesture of giving away free puzzles to teachers and students grew into a globally recognized event by 2002, now celebrated by millions of enthusiasts, schools, and libraries worldwide.
While puzzles are undeniably fun, National Puzzle Day also highlights several serious benefits for our well-being.
Solving a puzzle, particularly a physical one like an escape room or a jigsaw, provides a comprehensive whole-brain workout, forcing you to engage both the logical left side and the creative right side of your brain simultaneously, sharpening your problem solving skills and keeping your mind agile.
Beyond the mental exercise, puzzles play a significant role in supporting mental health.
Focusing on a single, solvable problem is proven to lower stress levels and provide a genuine dopamine hit of satisfaction once that final piece clicks into place.
Alongside Leeds providing mathematical problems as we celebrate being the UK’s first-ever City of Math in 2026, here are a couple more suggestions for all the family to celebrate National Puzzle Day this year - if the jigsaw puzzle isn’t quite as stimulating for you as it once was.
