Peter Kay issues cheeky plea to Leeds over final 'Better Late Than Never' show in support of cancer charities

Legendary stand-up comedian Peter Kay has singled out ticket sales in Leeds when discussing his final shows next year.

The Bolton comedian, 52, announced the last run of 12 shows of the ‘Better Late Than Never’ tour last month and confirmed that all the profits will be donated between 12 different cancer charities.

Included is a date at the First Direct Bank Arena on Friday, July 24, after recently saying that the city is his “favourite place to perform”.

It will be his 10th appearance at the arena, though he has now said that ticket sales are not what he had hoped for.

Appearing on BBC Look North, Kay said: “It’s no skin off my nose putting more dates and it would mean so much to those charities. And it’s selling well except in Leeds and Sheffield, which is at 65%.”

He joked that he had come on air specifically to plead with people to buy the tickets, adding: “It’s an ideal Christmas gift.”

He also discussed how much more comforting he finds being in the north, saying: “Northern people are just warmer, kinder and funnier.”

Speaking about the accents, he said: “You hear people in the south, and I’m not being anti-southern, but it sounds a bit harsher and I think up here it’s a bit warmer.

“When I first started doing it (stand up comedy) I started to soften it but I realised that’s who you are, that’s how you talk.”

The ribbing of Leeds comes after Lewis Capaldi had a tongue-in-cheek rant at the city on the Graham Norton Show over the sale of tickets for his show at Roundhay Park, saying: “What the f*** are you playing at?”
